Dracopedia Student Art Contest

Dracopedia: The Great Dragons is coming out this month, and to celebrate I am holding a Student Art Contest!  I hope that you will all have fun with this idea and show me the fantastic work that you've been doing.  They'll be prizes and guest judges, so I can't wait to see what you'll all come up with.
Here are the Details:

The Challenge: Design and illustrate an original dragon of your own.  Any kind of dragon is acceptable, and in any medium and any format.  One entry per person please. The more original the better!  I'm really interested in seeing what fantastical designs you'll come up with.

Deadline: June 25, 2012.

Entry Details: Join the Dracopedia Project, and send your entry as ".jpg" (no more than 1000 px on its longest side) to: woconnor@wocstudios.com and place "Dracopedia Challenge" in the subject line.  Please include a brief note with your name, age,  where you're from and tell me about your dragon. If you have any questions please leave them in the comment space.

Entry Requirements:  This contest is geared towards young artists and students in order to give them a showcase to share their work,  so to be fair I am limiting the contest to students and young enthusiasts up to age 21.  For you professionals and semi-professionals, try to get your students and young friends involved. I have no way of verifying your information, so lets all use the honor system! Thanks.

Prizes:  All the entries will be displayed on The Dracopedia Project after the deadline passes and the winners will be announced.  There will be two categories.  Youth Category will be for anyone up to the age of 15.  Student Category will be for anyone 16 to 21.  First Prize in each category will be an original drawing from Dracopedia:The Great Dragons and a signed copy of the new Book.  Second prize in each category will be a signed copy of Dracopedia: the Great Dragons.

Guest Judges:  I'm very excited to have three friends and colleagues that have agreed to help me in this contest. Dan Dos Santos, Lars Grant West and Todd Lockwood.

I hope you all have fun, and I can't wait to see your dragons!!

Enjoy.

  2. One image per entry is what will be judged. If you have additional designs that you would like us to see you can include a link to your webpage, or social art page. Thanks.

  6. A friend of mine linked this post, knowing those of us love dragons, and I've checked out the Dracopedia from the library before and had been hoping to buy it.

Anyways, methinks that I shall try this.

    Couple questions:

You would ship anywhere in the U.S., correct? I just recently moved to West Africa, so would I still qualify? If I won anything (though highly unlikely), my grandmother lives in Kansas and could recieve and send on anything to me.

Does 'do whatever you want' mean I can do either a full-body drawing or a face profile?

Even if I don't qualify, methinks I'll just do it for fun. :) As for medium...good old graphite will work for me.

    Thanks!

    1. Elizabeth-
Where you live will not be a disqualifier. And "whatever you want" means just that- what ever you feel represents your concept or idea in the best way. Creativity is my biggest criteria-skills as a painter may or may not be taken into account. A great doodle could win over a mediocre oil painting. Have fun!

  7. I would really like to join this contest but I'm worried about getting disqualified because I'm turning 22 this month (a few days before deadline... ;__;). Don't know if my entry would be accepted or not...

Also I'm not living in the USA, but I'm still wishing to be allowed to participate.

I would be very thankful about any kind of reply, just to know if I'm allowed to join or not.

    Thanks in advance : )

  8. would creating a seriously different race of dragon be alright? or even making a new species of different dragon? (say lindworm?)

    1. Your imagination is the only limit!
ANY dragon you want. Doesn't have to be from the book.

  9. I really enjoyed reading your book and can't wait to see the next one. I love the way you have so much diversity in your dragon art.

About this competition: is it ok to enter an image with multiple dragons (of the same species)? Say for example, two male dragons fighting each other?
